Sick pay (especially company sick pay) can be withheld if the employee fails to follow reporting procedures, does not provide medical evidence (such as fit notes), or has exhausted their entitlement. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) can only be withheld if the employee does not meet eligibility criteria under UK law.

If the employee believes the decision is unfair or based on incorrect information, they should contact HR or their line manager promptly, ideally in writing. They can provide additional medical evidence, clarify absence details, or formally appeal under the company’s grievance procedure.
